Chapter Thirteen

Harrison had been back in Canada for three days now, and every second of it, he wished he was still in Bali. The normal relief he felt at crawling into his own bed was negated by the absence of Jade. And meetings were interminable without her whispering a translation into his ear. If he didn’t get her out of his mind soon, he’d go insane.

“Thank you, gentlemen. I’ll let you know my decision by the end of the day.” It would be no, of course, because he hadn’t heard a thing they’d said.

The boardroom door hadn’t even closed behind them before his sister pushed it open. “Yo, Harrison, ready to do lunch?” Sonia’s exuberance always brought a smile to his face. No wonder she wasn’t taken seriously in the business community. She looked like a cheerleader who’d misplaced her pom-poms.

He took in her leggings and her top, which was either a long shirt or a very short dress. Coupled with her ponytail and her flat shoes, she was the antithesis of a corporate executive. “You’d get more respect if you dressed appropriately for the workplace, you know.”

She shrugged one shoulder, as if she couldn’t be bothered to lift both. “I like to take people by surprise. They think I’m all dumb and sweet, and then bam! I slay them with my brain.” She did a few karate chops and one high kick into the air to prove her point. “Anyway, you’re stuffy enough for both of us.”

He wasn’t getting into this with her today. Not when he was jetlagged and going through Jade withdrawals.

“I’ll be ready for lunch in a couple of minutes. I need to check my messages first.” What he needed to do was to stop looking at his phone every five minutes to see if Jade had contacted him. She’d sent him one photo on Sunday—a black-and-white shot of her back while she meditated on her deck with the amazing view in the distance. The only thing she’d had on was a set of headphones. It was captioned, “Listening to a mixed tape.” His cock twitched just remembering the picture.

His phone buzzed as he held it in his hand.

Jade: Thank you for the peonies. Six dozen seems excessive, though.

He flopped back into the chair to reply. When they’d exchanged contact information, he’d been pleased she’d given him her home address as well as phone numbers.

Harrison: Not really. I had to stop at six because that’s all they had. You definitely redefined pleasure for me.

Jade: I had fun too. How was your flight back? You feeling okay?

Harrison: Fine to both. Had a nine-hour layover in Seoul, so went to visit my grandparents. Realized my Korean language skills suck. Have always relied on my mother to translate. Do you speak Korean?

Jade: No, but I can learn.

She’d learn Korean for him? His stupid heart fibrillated.

Harrison: How’s the trial?

Jade: Soul-destroying. Woman was beaten by her husband back in Sumatra but doesn’t look like she’ll be able to stay in Oz because she’s not a political refugee.
